At TVR, we believe in the transformative power of hair. It’s easy to love super long hair: looking after it, pampering it, and styling it in so many ways. But there comes a time in everyone’s hair journey when you want to embrace change. The best way to satisfy your desire for a hair reset is to take a simple, clean break, and take the plunge with a statement-making cut.
In 2024, as trends ebb and flow, one style stands the test of time: the classic bob. From its inception in the 1920s to its resurgence in the modern era, the bob hairstyle continues to captivate with its versatility, sophistication, and effortless chic.
The bob hairstyle has undergone numerous transformations over the decades, adapting to the changing tastes and preferences of each era. Read more to discover the TVR stylists’ choice of the ideal bob for your face shape.
In 2024, we see a fusion of classic elements with contemporary twists, which allows it to be customised to fit all face shapes. Whether it’s the blunt bob, the textured bob, or this seasons ‘French bob’ which is cut close into the nape with a blunt edge and soft texturing to be worn in sleek or tousled, there’s a style to suit every individual.
The key to a good bob lies in its adaptability making it suitable for any occasion. With the right styling techniques and products, you can effortlessly transition from day to night in minutes. The canvas of a fabulous looking bob lies in the condition of the hair, which must be shiny and well moisturised, whether your hair is curly or straight.
Kirsty – aka ‘The TVR Queen of Bob’s’ says, “A bob needs to move and be light reflective, if the hair is dry, dull and parched – it is not going to do this. Avoid over straightening and always use a heat protector that protects up to 230 degrees, such as one of the Kerastase Thermiques. And most importantly of all, get the line of the bob cut back every 6 weeks, once the precision is gone and the ends start to dry out and it loses its swing. The only revival is a haircut to the correct length for your face shape.”
At TVR, we understand that a bob cut is not one-size-fits-all. That’s why our expert stylists are trained to look at your face shape to create a bespoke bob that accentuates your unique features and complements your personal aesthetic. So, let’s look at how different face shapes can interpret this style.
Round Face Shape
The round face shape features a full face, with few clearly defined angles, a round chin, wide cheekbones, and almost equal proportions between the length and width of the face.
“Those with rounder faces may be apprehensive of wearing bobs for fear of making their faces appear rounder”, says Kerry, salon owner. But we can adjust the shape and angles to be flattering. A slightly parted fringe will take away the upper roundness without closing the face down, thanks to the peek through of the forehead. The silhouette should be slightly triangular which balances roundness and textured or flicking-out edges give a sharpness that a round face can sometimes lack.
A round face shape can also suit better a slightly longer, classic bob without any shaping or feathering in the sides. This cut should be styled just below the chin line, with added volume to the top of the hair and base of the neck (not the sides).
Heart Face Shape
A heart-shaped face is wider across the forehead and has a smaller, more delicate chin. Avoid a bob that opens the forehead up, instead opt for a slightly off-centre parting and allow the hair to fall, framing your face and narrowing the forehead. More volume around the chin and neck will help balance the face, style this bob with sleeker roots and texture in the mid-lengths to draw the eye to the middle of the face. “A loose wave without volume on the top of the head suits a heart shape” says Jenni, Art Director.
Oval Face Shape
The oval face shape features a jawline that is rounded and proportional, with a forehead slightly wider than the jawline. For this shape, the cheekbones are the widest part of the face. Those with oval face shapes suit many hairstyles thanks to a more even balance of volume. Nowadays it’s deemed attractive to have high and sharp cheekbones, and so if you’d like to refine the softness of an oval face shape, go for a chin-length bob worn with one side tucked behind the ear. “A touch of asymmetry can flatter many face shapes but will also give interest to an otherwise classical oval shape” says Christie, Master
Stylist.
If you are lucky enough to have an oval face shape, then you can pull off most haircuts easily. For example, a shaggy Graduated bob with plenty of layers would be fantastic for anyone with an oval face shape.
Square Face Shape
The square face shape features a wide forehead, square chin, and strong jawline that is equal in facial width and height. With square-shaped faces, the ultimate haircut should help soften the face.
Squarer face shapes already have an abundance of sharper angles and so a longer, curvier bob will bring femininity and softness to the face. “Styling with waves adds more curves and a side parting or tucking behind the ear on just one side will help to draw the eye away from a square jaw by highlighting the cheekbones instead” says Chloe, Creative stylist.
For this reason, an asymmetrical bob is also a perfect choice, where one side is visibly longer than the other. Another option for a square face shape is the angled forward bob, which is longer at the front merging into a chin-length cut.
Diamond Face shape
A diamond face shape has width at the cheeks and a narrower forehead and chin and so it’s important for the bob length to sit closer to the jaw than the mid face. For best results go for a shape that is wider nearer the chin to balance the face. “A side parting works best on a diamond face shape as a middle parting would further narrow the forehead” says Alev Precision cutter and Master Stylist.
Rectangle Face shape
“For a rectangular face, a bob that sits right on the jaw and curves under will help to soften the corners”, Kerry says. Avoid totally straight styles as texture will give width and curve to the middle where typically a rectangular face shape is flatter. Side partings work better than middle but a middle can work if the hair is worn with texture and body.
So, if you’re searching for a shorter style that is universally flattering, elegant, and fashionable—look no further than the classic bob!
