There is a tonne of fake news out there about what makes your hair the healthiest. Don’t fall for it – some top tips and advice are merely myths and can backfire! We’ve rounded up some of the most common misconceptions about hair. You may be surprised by what you find…
It’s fine to sleep with wet hair
You may have been told that falling asleep with wet hair is fine and doesn’t cause any problems, but it can actually damage the follicle and cause breakage of the hair strands. The heat from your head combined with a wet scalp can also encourage bacteria. Creative Stylist Charlotte recommends drying your hair to at least 70% dry before bed to reduce any damage.
Pulling out grey hair stops regrowth
You may be tempted to pull out that lone grey hair with the hope it doesn’t grow back but unfortunately it doesn’t work like that. Only one hair grows per follicle so plucking a grey hair will only get you a new grey hair in its place. Plucking hair can traumatise the hair follicle, and you can damage it to the point where it will no longer grow any hair at all.
You can’t wash your hair everyday
It’s an urban myth that washing your hair daily leads to greasier hair. Creative Stylist Samantha advises that as long as you are use a good shampoo tailored to your hair needs and are thorough with the wash, then it doesn’t cause any harm to your hair. It’s a personal choice how frequently you like to wash hair and everyone’s locks are different and may need extra pampering.
Wash oily hair with hot water
Washing oily hair with hot water does not make it any cleaner. In fact, hot water stimulates the gland that produces the oil. Therefore, we suggest washing your hair with tepid water. This results in clean hair without encouraging extra oil production
Cold water doesn’t make hair shinier
Hairdressing and Training Coordinator Emma busts this myth. She states that rinsing hair with cold water smooths and closes the hair cuticle so maintains the health of the hair, resulting in a glossy shine.
You can’t show your stylist photos of hair goals
Clients are always worried about showing photos of hair goals to their Stylist, but as Art Director George tells us, at The Vanilla Room, they are very welcomed. The more images of hair you can show, the better our understanding of what your vision is and therefore we can achieve better results.
