As hairdressing professionals, we take our clients and teams’ health and safety very seriously. If you have coloured hair at TVR, then it’s important to understand our Allergy Alert Testing (AAT) policy. We offer two different methods of AAT.
Option 1
Colourstart passport – A one-time only ‘remote’ test you take at home (at least 5 days before your visit). You then simply share the results with us – giving us complete creative freedom to use any colour on all future visits.
Option 2
In-salon AAT – This ‘live’ test, needs to be performed every 6 months or at least 48 hours before any visit on which you are planning to change your shade or colour brand. Just pop into the salon for a coffee on a day you are not having hair colour and we will apply some of your chosen shade to your arm, leave it there for 45 mins, rinse and observe the result.

How to get your Colourstart Passport
- Download the Colourstart app, scanning the QR code provided with your phone camera
- Validate yourself via the email you receive
- Answer 6 screening questions within the app, to confirm Colourstart is suitable for you
- Purchase your Colourstart test either online or in the TVR salon
- Apply Colourstart patch test, following the instructions in the video below
- Get the green light to colour in the app
Then, on every future colour appointment, jump on your app, answer the same pre-screening questions before every colour service and again ‘share’ them with The Vanilla Room. If you forget, don’t panic. If nothing has changed, just do this when you arrive at your appointment, it takes seconds.

Option 2
Live in-salon Allergy Alert Test
We provide a free of charge traditional in-salon Allergy Alert Test for those who would prefer to use this method. This is performed as follows:
- Colourant is applied to inside of forearm
- Allow to dry for 45 minutes without covering, and remain in salon
- Client completes an in-salon form
- Test area is washed from arm and patted dry – team member and client observe site and if no reaction, signs to confirm
- Client continues to observe area for 48 hours minimum
- On day of colour appointment, client signs form to confirm no further reaction in 48 hours after the test
- Proceed with hair colouring for the brand and shade used to test
