How To Transition To Grey Hair Gracefully
The biggest misunderstanding about the transition to grey is that you can just ‘strip’ the hair dye out and it will be back to the natural colour underneath and reveal your grey. This is not possible. Any previous colour can change the composition of the natural hair underneath. So, when you remove the dye you expose an element of warmth, and the darker the previous shade was the more warmth removing the colour will expose. You cannot turn it back to grey.
So, what can you do?
Firstly, grow your roots to as long as you can bear. We need to see exactly where the variations in your natural colour are. From here we can then decide if a colour remover to strip out the colour will get us nearer to your goal by taking a strand test or if a combination of hi and low lights would be a better option. Either way going grey is not a quick process. It takes time and a lot of respect for the condition of the hair. Your stylist will work through the options with you before you take the plunge, clearly outlining the stages, what to expect your hair to look like at every stage and the costs involved.
Embrace your natural hair!
Once you have achieved a visually natural grey then comes the final stage – embracing your natural hair. It’s common to notice your hair feels thinner and the texture is different. This is because hair colour swells the hair, so if you go au natural the hair can seem limper and harder to manage. You may need to use different styling products and a volumizing shampoo such as Kerastase Volumifiqe or the Davines Volu range. If you are predominantly white at the front and top of your head, you may feel that you can see your scalp more and it is common to think it looks ‘pinker’ than it did before. This is just an optical illusion as believe it or not white hair is a bit like a see through tube, so you are just seeing more scalp through it than you did when it was a darker, denser colour.
