How To Perfect Your Short Hair
Short hair is everywhere this season; so, we’ve pulled together our top tips and information from Stylists at The Vanilla Room to ensure your short cut is show stopping.
Pixie Cuts
A close to the head pixie cut suits a smaller face shape, Kerry, Salon Owner – who has always personally opted for a shorter style advises.
“Maintenance cuts are key at 4-6 weeks for a very short style; you want the edges of the cut to feel neat, tidy and finished. Curly hair in a pixie length can be a little more challenging to manage so I would advise only those with straight or slight natural movement to attempt this length as keeping the look current is more suited to finger drying than a round brush.
I advise washing everyday as easier to manage in the morning than trying to battle ‘bedhead hair’. Apply a light weight spray heat protection that gives shine, like Kerastase Chroma Absolu Thermique, then a quick blast with fingers and a vent brush and use a flexible fibre was to finish and define the cut. Techni Art Web is my go-to, as it does not build up in the hair, so I can add more later in the day to move the look onto something more suited to a night out.”
Natural Movement
At The Vanilla Room, Master Stylist Alev is the queen of no fuss short hair! Alev says…
“If you want a shorter style to be quick and easy then you need to learn to work with your natural movement – don’t fight it. If you have a neckline that the hair kicks out – go with it, a cowlick that causes your fringe to break, chose a style that parts on the side and retains a bit of length in that area. We can advise you as to how to work with your natural hair growth to make short hair quick to do and fun to wear. For any above the shoulder hair to look amazing it needs a good colour with lots of shine, I am a massive fan of this season’s warmer tones that complement the skin tone of so many of my clients and are so glossy.”
Face Shape
When it comes to shorter styles both Kerry and Alev agree that there is a misconception that a rounder or larger face shape cannot wear a short look. In fact, shorter hair can be a much better option! The cut can be more angular to deflect from wider areas of the face and length can be retained in areas for height and width to mask and balance the face shape. Those who wear shorter hair often tell Stylists that when they have their hair freshly cut, friends often ask if they have lost weight! An added bonus for wearing a great haircut.
